
Pouto or also called poutorou. is a traditional Peulh hat that attracts respect and consideration for the wearer. the traditional Cap of the Fulani community in Guinea. It appeared after the battle of 1725, led by Karamoko Alpha Barry of Timbo, after which the Theocratic Kingdom of Foutah Djallon was created (1726-1896). “Poutoorou”, is thus created in honor and for the memory of this ancient kingdom of Foutah, of which it bears the symbols of the nine “diwés” (provinces).
In Foutah (now Middle Guinea), “Poutoorou”, as a symbol of greatness and purity, four categories of people were entitled to wear it. They are the “gando” (the scholar), the “landho” (chief or king), “djion Djaoudi” (the rich) and the “maoudho gorol” (the notable).
The prefecture of Mamou is renowned for the quality of the “poutoorou” it makes, in this case in Timbo (former political capital of the theocratic kingdom of Foutah Djallon. The price of poutoorou therefore varies according to its quality, and the best can cost up to 600,000 GNF Round or square, the “poutoh” sports several colors and is designed on variable dimensions.
Male cap, “poutoorou” is worn with a pretty boubou and slippers, during parties or ceremonies.
Fulani identity element initially expressing the social rank of its bearer, “poutoorou”, is nowadays worn by anyone (adult and old) wishing to attract respect and admiration. “Today, it is generally worn by those who want to express their maturity”, testifies Bah Elhadj, originally from Timbi, one of the diwés (provinces) of the former theocratic kingdom of Fouta Djallon.
